If I thought I was struggling with my creative rhythm last week, this week, I felt like I’d fallen off the swing entirely. Even this blog post was hard to begin. For days, my energy has been low and I’ve struggled to focus. So, when I’ve lost momentum, I’ve hopped from task to task, project to project, and too often, distraction to distraction.
It often started innocently.
One of my last short stories, a handful of characters, books on my TBR list, and some good writing advice were inspired by Instagram reels. How do you watch just one?
I would mean to check something practical—the forecast, a calendar, my step count—but then I would get distracted by my inbox. Sometimes, I needed a laugh, so I scrolled through funny post screenshots on Pinterest for a lot longer than I intended. On Monday night, I wanted to charge my phone, so I felt less guilty about playing too many levels of a mindless game (while I failed to enjoy watching the Broncos).
The main cause of my current slump isn’t a mystery to me: I’m not writing enough. Between various distractions, non-writing projects, low energy, and an array of valid or flimsy excuses, I haven’t been doing enough of the thing I love most.
To get back into the swing of things, I have three goals for this week: finish taking notes on my current novel draft, start writing the next one, and make tangible progress on a short story.
In order to meet my goals, I’ll use some of my favorite techniques to resist resistance and I’ll run some of my own “Find the Fun” experiments.
I’ll keep you posted on my writing life and pursuit of publication, and as always, LET’S GO PIOS! GO AVS GO!
