Hockey is finally back!! Well, sort of. Almost.
This past weekend, I had the pleasure of watching a bunch of alumni from the University of Denver Pioneers and Colorado Avalanche face off for an evening of hockey fun and shenanigans at Magness Arena.
I didn’t take nearly enough pictures. I got caught up in the excitement of going to a hockey game and seeing veterans show off their skills, even in the almost warm arena. Last year’s high-scoring match ended in a shootout won by the Pioneers. This year, the Avalanche alumni had the edge. But this game wasn’t really about making winners and losers.
As I so often do, I couldn’t help but see a parallel between the hockey game in front of me and my writing life. I came, not to see one player or team win or lose, but for the love of the game, for the thrill of it, for the fun of it.
While watching these guys, not competing for regular season points or a championship trophy, but just playing the sport they love most for the joy of doing it, I was reminded of the thing I need to continually aim to incorporate more of in my writing life: fun.
So often, I can get caught up in the stakes. I think writing is one of my best skills, the thing I want to do full-time and for the long haul, and something I truly enjoy doing. I’d like to think that I am most myself and happiest when I’m writing and creating. If I obsess over writing the “right” stories, the most “perfect” drafts, and getting published as soon as possible, I can forget a key piece of what got me into writing in the first place: the fun of, the love of, the joy of writing.
